I have volunteered in-person for various Los Angeles LGBT Center events prior to the coronavirus pandemic, but I am glad that I found a way to volunteer remotely during the crisis by making calls for the Hello Club.
It means the world to me when a senior client I’ve called to check on tells me that I’ve made their day. I’ve talked to so many lovely people, and I’m glad that I am able to provide them with support and resources if they feel lonely or have a hard time getting essentials.
Of course, many of the seniors I’ve talked to also tell me wonderful stories about their lives — they are inspiring people. I have felt an especially strong connection when I talk to the Asian LGBTQIA+ members of the community. I’m happy to have the opportunity to talk to Asian seniors, and they’re glad to hear that I’m Asian, too.
I’m queer myself, and I want to find ways to meet other LGBTQIA+ people and make contributions to the Los Angeles LGBTQIA+ community.
I grew up in Los Angeles but lived in a small town in Connecticut for two years before moving back to L.A. in 2019. I found it challenging to find a queer safe space in Connecticut and realized how important it is for my emotional and mental well-being to spend time with other LGBTQIA+ people.
During the pandemic I’ve stayed connected with my chosen family through video calls during these past months. It’s not the same as being able to see them in person, hug them, etc. But seeing their faces virtually, at least, is what’s helping me get through these times.
