As a volunteer, I’ve really enjoyed helping at events like the Anniversary Gala Vanguard Awards, Simply diVine, and Out Under the Stars movie nights at Hollywood Forever.
There are a variety of things to do from cleaning dinner plates to using an iPad in order to sell items in an event’s silent auction.
I first got involved with the Center by leading hikes for women 50 years and over. On one of the hikes, someone mentioned Volunteer Services and I showed up for their next orientation. Since then, I have felt more involved in the whole LGBT community different ages and different kinds of events. I feel like I’m really a part of something.
Anyone who is thinking about volunteering is going to enjoy it so much. It has helped me to acquire different skills and points of view. I meet people; they mingle with me. I mingle with them, and we get to know each other. I want to give back, I want to help my community, my people.
I just retired in August after 20 years as a teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Previously, I had only been able to volunteer on the weekends and some evenings. Now I will be able to do more. It costs me nothing, and I get so much enjoyment and satisfaction in the end.
