Queer the Census

The 2020 Census is here! Although the goal of the Census is to count everyone living in the U.S., certain populations are inevitably undercounted, including LGBTQ people. We need to be counted as part of the 2020 Census so our communities can:

  • Get access to federal funds for programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and public housing
  • Have representation in our state, local, and federal government
  • Enforce our civil rights

  • Hacer valer nuestros derechos civiles

Will the Census ask questions about U.S. citizenship?
No. There is not a citizenship question on the 2020 Census. The Census counts the number of people in your household, regardless of their immigration status.

Will my responses be shared publicly?
No. Data is encrypted and is not able to be traced back to you. Further, Federal law prohibits Census workers from distributing your Census data and prohibits your responses from being used against you by any government agency.

What are the gender options?
Female and male are the only gender options on Census 2020. This is unfair and upsetting. The Census does encourage self-identification and your responses will not be cross-checked with any other documents, such as birth certificates.

Though the Census does not explicitly ask about gender identity or sexual orientation, LGBTQ people exist within all of the different populations that are undercounted and underserved. It is important that we are counted so that our communities have fair access to democracy and social services funding. We are part of this country and we need to be represented.
