Today’s #CenterYourPride invites you into the vibrant world of the artist Mickalene Thomas, who we are proud to call one of our 2024 Gala honorees. Thomas’ mixed media and photographic work gushes with a devotion to imaging Black women as complex, self-affirming, and sensual beings. Her muses are often represented in varying states of leisure—a radical insistence that Black women deserve the pleasures of rest. Mickalene reminds us, “We too can recline. We too can relax and be seen doing so and have it be empowering and validating for our sense of self. We can be in the moment and in our own space and not be seen as being lazy.”
