The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Heart of Gold 50th anniversary concert at the Greek Theatre will feature an star-studded lineup that includes musical performances by Sia, Rufus Wainwright, Jenifer Lewis, Thelma Houston, Ty Herndon, the Gay Men’s Chorus of LA, and Valentina of RuPaul’s Drag Raceand FOX’s live broadcast of Rent.
Also taking part in the September 21 concert and multimedia show are Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Kathy Griffin, Margaret Cho, Queer Eyecast members Karamo Brown and Bobby Berk, Tig Notaro, Nico Santos and Zeke Smith, the cast of Good Trouble, and Bruce Vilanch.
Center CEO Lorri L. Jean describes Hearts of Goldas a “singular night of storytelling, music, and entertainment that promises to be a joyous and powerful celebration of our past achievements and future vision.”
“This will be a show unlike any other, telling the story of the Center and the LGBT movement with pride, passion, and humor,” Jean adds. “Our 50th anniversary is a historic milestone in the movement for equality and justice.”
Griffin, who currently stars in the documentary Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story, says she is honored to be a part of the epic show.
“Not only will we be raising funds for social services and housing of homeless LGBT youth, we’ll also be shining a light on the last FIFTY years of outreach this organization has supplied to Los Angeles,” the two-time Emmy and Grammy winner wrote on Instagram.
“When I moved to this city around 40 years ago, the LGBT Center was already doing incredible things,” Griffin added. “I was lucky enough to perform multiple one-woman shows over the years as a way to help give attention to, at the time, a very marginalized group. In 2019, we’ve come a LONG way, but that doesn’t mean our work is done! There are still many LGBT kids without a home, living on the street, in need of our love and support.”
Herndon described himself as “so honored” to be a part of the evening.
“I’m secretly hoping that Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin will take me on a date!” he joked on Instagram.
