In response to the U.S. House of Representative’s historic passage of the Equality Act today and the introduction of the same bill in the Senate earlier this week, Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Lorri L. Jean issued the following statement:
“Today’s vote in the House of Representatives is a historic step forward for equality. But our work is far from over. Recent history reminds us just how quickly bigotry and hate can take hold and be weaponized by politicians against the LGBTQ community.
“Passing the Equality Act won’t change the hearts and minds of those people who seek to divide, demean, and take away our rights. Rather, it will reaffirm what an overwhelming majority of Americans already believe: that equality for all should be the law of the land. LGBTQ people deserve to live full and free lives that are supported and protected by our federal government.
“With the passage of the Equality Act in the House, the Senate now has a job to do—and we must make sure they do it. Passing the Equality Act will put the Senate—and our nation—on the right side of history. And, indeed, this is the historic moment to do so. We will do all we can to make sure the Senate grasps this moment and joins our fight for equality.”
